What a night, what a show, and now it’s all over….

You could be confused with thinking that this is a write up reviewing the latest global rock band and the opening night of their next big tour – Perhaps it is, as the mood of the near 300 or so people crammed into the Napier’s iconic ‘egg’ lecture theatre would easily have suggested so.

With Professor Bill Buchanan opening the evening with a series of Mexican Waves, it was clear that this was no ordinary Scottish Blockchain Meetup, and the audience didn’t let us down in creating an air of excitement, and so with the warm up act completed, Paul Forrest, MBN’s Chair, took to the stage to introduce the main act.

So… who was our rock star for the pleasant June evening in Edinburgh?

Andreas M. Antonopoulos, our speaker for the evening, is a best-selling author, speaker, educator, and one of the world’s foremost bitcoin and open blockchain experts.

In 2014, Antonopoulos authored the ground-breaking book, Mastering Bitcoin (O’Reilly Media), widely considered to be the best technical guide ever written about the technology. His second book, The Internet of Money, unveiled the “why” of bitcoin—and became a bestseller on Amazon— and led to the wildly successful follow-up The Internet of Money Volume Two. His fourth book, Mastering Ethereum (O’Reilly Media) was published in December of 2018.

He has a reputation that proceeds him and with an expectation of him delivering an electric talk that combines economics, psychology, technology, and game theory with current events, personal anecdotes, and historical precedent, he took to the stage.

With the day having started out with Facebook’s announcement regarding its plans for Libra, a self-styled cryptocurrency of types, we were all in for a rollercoaster of a presentation and our speaker didn’t disappoint.

Andreas effortlessly transliterated complex issues of blockchain technology for our audience and helped to make sense of Facebook’s announcement.  Helping to see through the abstract of Facebook’s plans and set real world context, Andreas held court with an appreciative audience before then meeting and greeting the participants where they had the opportunity to pick the brains of one of the world’s leading authorities on this fascinating and sometimes controversial subject matter.
