Edinburgh’s Recent Hackathon Shows That the Future is Bright in FinTech

As a leading Recruitment and People Solutions business within this industry, MBN were proud to show support at the #EdinFinTech event this past weekend and it was a weekend event full of fun, big ideas and A LOT of coding.

We arrived on the Friday night to help with set up before the hoards of budding participants made their way to start the weekend’s activities. Deloitte were kind enough to host the event and their fantastic Edinburgh offices offered a remarkable castle backdrop to this Finance Hackathon.

At MBN we love supporting and attending these events because we get to see that – at the very heart of Scotland’s rapidly growing tech sector – enthusiastic, confident and talented people of all ages are pushing the limits of what they think they’re capable of.

Scotland, and Edinburgh in particular, has a long history in the finance sector so it is no surprise to see over 70 people attend a Finance styled Hackathon. The event itself involved participants pitching their ideas on creating applications that can add to the FinTech market. Within this goal there were two themes which teams were encouraged to put their ideas towards: products to improve financial inclusion and designing financial products for millennials.

After we heard a series of lightning talks from some mentors we had a quick break – for beer, pizza and networking – and then we went straight into the pitches. 7 people in total went up with their ideas for products that could fit in the FinTech market.

It was this moment we were reminded why we support these events, 7 completely different ideas which all had the credibility and market need to be viable products. It was inspiring.

After the great pitches people mingled and teams were formed; bringing skills from coding & analytics skills to marketing & branding experience.

Deloitte had organised supervision for the offices to be open from 8am until midnight and it was no surprise to see everyone there until the final hour – everyone was so excited to start and the teams had an instant rapport.

MBN have taken from this experience that there is a huge abundance of talent looking to fit in this ever-expanding tech space. If hackathons show us anything it is that the pool of talent out there is so motivated and ambitious, companies from Global organisations to Startups will be fighting for the best people.
