MBN held an event in Edinburgh on 1st May entitled ‘Myths, Mythologies and the State of Big Data’. Taking place in the iconic boardroom of Clydesdale Bank, the event brought together the maximum capacity of 35 industry professionals to discuss and debate the key trends of Big Data with the help of some expert speakers.
First up was Paul Forrest, MBN non-exec Director, to discuss the findings of the MBN Big Data survey published in 2013. The survey questioned 135 participating companies on the state of Big Data, its approach, likely benefits and the quantum of spend in their own organisations. Paul discussed the key findings, conclusions and observations relating to the results.
Following questions and feedback on Paul’s remarks, Stephen Ingledew, Managing Director of Customers and Marketing at Standard Life took the floor. His presentation, along with input from some of his team in the audience, focused on customer data, insight & analytics and the successes and challenges of embedding into Standard Life’s culture.
The industry perspective was then provided by Neil Logan, Chief Technology Officer at Lockheed Martin UK ISGS Civil. His presentation focused on the topic of ‘Big Data’ as a buzz word and bridging the gap between academia and industry – talented people and skills are key to understanding data science.
The event closed with questions and feedback and many attendees stayed for the opportunity to network with industry peers. We are thrilled with the success of the event and as a result hope to hold many more in the future – we will keep you posted.
