MBN Academy – Discussing Data Opportunities – #MBNskills

Written by Robin Huggins, Head of Business Development.

University of Glasgow School of Mathematics and Statistics Away Day.

It was an absolute pleasure to accept an invitation to participate in an Away Day with The University of Glasgow’s School of Mathematics and Statistics recently. Not only are they a tremendous academic institution with some outstandingly talented people – they’re also the University where I studied back in the day!

Having met Dr Ludger Evers recently at The Data Lab’s MSc. Launch event, I was honoured when he and Professor E Marian Scott OBE asked me along to meet with them and their students on Wednesday 7 December at the Blythswood Hotel in Glasgow.

Their Away Day focused on the commercial application of the students’ learnings to date with specific focus on their experiences on a 1-year Industrial Placement, the lessons that could be passed on from experiences on these placements to students about to participate in the programme and for a wider discussion around the commercial landscape for Mathematics and Statistics skills in Scotland, the UK and beyond.

Our day began with a free-flowing round table discussion of the above subjects chaired by Marian. I was genuinely impressed with the knowledge, passion and humility shown by some seriously intelligent people. Thoughts were expanded, ideas and experiences shared and my input was sought on the wider contextual issue around where the skills gained by the students in their studies and on their placements would fit into the wider commercial environment.

MBN to find 90 funded MSc. students their placements/Internships for summer 2017.
We have been tasked to work with the 90 students, profiling them all, coaching them on CV writing and interview skills etc. and then to assist them in finding suitable projects.

We will be placing these students for FREE to companies (we will do this work and there will be NO introduction fee for companies to pay)

Data Lab’s MSc 2016/17 intake is more than doubling to 90 places funded across seven Scottish universities – up from the 40 places funded across three universities previously. This extended commitment underlines the growing need to deliver workplace-ready data skills into Scotland’s business and public sector communities.
The programme will ensure the continued availability of some of the very best workplace-ready and most talented technical and data students to both Scottish businesses and the public sector.

MBN Solutions were proud to be exclusive recruitment partners for Big Data Scotland.
MBN members had a great time last week at the conference in Our Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh. It was lovely to meet lots of interesting people from various backgrounds in the Data Community.

Organised by ScotTech Engagement, the conference brought together technologists, data experts and business leaders to explore the evolution of Big Data Analytics. The event contextualised the vast range of analytics tools, and offered practical examples of how they can be applied to specific tasks in processing, mining and visualisation.

The event provided a great opportunity to network and we hope everyone enjoyed the day as much as we did.

Personalisation in E-commerce –
Glasgow Data Science & Technology Meetup!

It was great to see everyone who attended Novembers Meetup at the Tontine building last night.

Thanks to Jedidiah Francis; Head of Data Science at ASOS and Martina Pugliese; Data Scientist at Mallzee, who presented topics discussing Personalisation in E-commerce

Jedidiah is a world class presenter and an expert in his field.  He has built and continues to build an exceptional team to solve tough problems that drive enormous business value.

Specialties: Statistical Modelling, Probabilistic modelling, Computational Statistics, Data Analysis, Machine learning algorithms, data mining, Classification, Maximum likelihood estimation, Hidden Markov models, Bioinformatics, algorithmic coding, R, C++, Pig, Hive, Hadoop, Mahout, Map/Reduce.

Martina is a Data Scientist at Mallzee, a startup based in Edinburgh whose mobile app is known as the “Tinder for Fashion” due to  the swipes-like interface it has created as first in the Fashion market. She is a physicist by background with training in data analysis and modelling, having worked in predicting how and when natural language evolves in time. She daily analyses large datasets of preferences which the users of the app produce. Her responsibilities at Mallzee range from producing algorithms for personalisation and generating insights about fashion trends in the market, to informing the business’ strategy with data. She is the opposite of a fashion fanatic, but she believes the rich data in this field provides a passport into people’s mind, and finds fascinating studying that.

The presentations were insightful and thought provoking gaining great interaction from the audience.

We hope everyone enjoyed the presentations.
