CityChain 17
4th April 2017 | IBM Southbank | London

What is CityChain17?
Blockchain is a hot topic, fast gaining column inches as an enabler of business and customer transformation alike. Blockchain represents tremendous business opportunities, but how do you cut through the hype?
CityChain17 brings together Blockchain and Distributed Ledger thought leaders and entrepreneurs from across the globe.  The aim?  To provide the best and latest informed thinking and hype-free exploration of ideas, use cases, challenges, and concerns.  The event is targeted at businesses, technologists, students, and academics with a need or desire to know more and to hear of the very best thinking in this important sector.

Why Attend?
Over the course of the last eighteen months, we have seen many events held to help people fast-track their knowledge of Blockchain. To date, the results have been mixed and we believe there are still too many gaps in the explanations provided and as a result, the hype remains high.
This event will deliver deep insight grounded in what is possible and what is up next for Blockchain. Based on our experience of running similar events, it will answer key questions, facilitate learning and provide an open forum for networking with people experienced in coal face implementation of distributed ledger solutions.,

The topics of discussion will include:
- What is distributed ledger technology (Blockchain) and what does it mean, for business?
- How are people starting to use it, and what’s next?  In particular, what do the use cases really look like?
- Blockchain is hot in Financial Services, but where else is it being tried, and how?  What next outside of the financial services sector
- Can Blockchain really cure the common cold? – the reality of the real issues and answers rather than the much-flaunted hype.

Data Talent Scotland 2017 - Another Success!

How do you improve upon an inaugural event that brought together around 150 postgraduate data science students, 200 data enthusiasts, 11 universities and 50 businesses from across Scotland?

What is it that they say? You go big or you go home…….?

Well, we went very much BIGGER this year.

You take those figures above and you add to them – in some cases you double them.

You add the likes of Sainsbury’s Bank, The Scottish Government, Unicef, SAS, National Health Service, Aquila Insight and Deloitte to the mix, sprinkle in a little bit of Formula One insight and you open the doors of Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh.

Then, you let the magic happen.

And the magic did happen. From breakfast time until evening, a non-stop stream of visitors, speakers, guests, students, enthusiasts and practitioners walked around the company and university stands, attended workshops and lectures, watched presentations, networked with each other and generally had a fantastic time talking, debating and asking questions around “Data Talent”.

MBN Solutions in partnership with the Data Lab and FutureX were incredibly proud to organise, present and participate in this year’s event – following the huge success of last year’s show.

We occupy a unique position within the ecosystem in which Data Talent Scotland exists. From an organisational perspective, we have spent the decade of our company’s existence at the sharp end of “Data Talent” – recruiting for some the most well-known and innovative brands in the Data space today. We still operate as Talent Acquisition specialists for an enviable portfolio of businesses looking to establish or augment their Data capability but we have also strengthened our own service portfolio with the addition of Data Consultancy offerings, formal Event and Meet-Up group management and our deep experience working with Universities and Academics to help them transition students into industry effectively under our #MBNSkills banner. Data Talent Scotland affords us a unique opportunity to deploy our organisational strength in each of the specialities listed above.

From our Marketing and Consultancy staff spending the day in discussions with Data Talent at our company stand, to our CEO’s sterling efforts in organisation behind the scenes, from our Chairman’s masterly hosting of an afternoon panel session to our Head of Business Development’s full-house Employability Workshop – we were very pleased to be fully involved with this year’s event.

Massive thanks to the amazing procession of speakers and guests who took to the stage, spent time presenting workshops, and interacted with the students and early career visitors. The time they gave up to tell us their stories and to help light the way for the Data Talent of tomorrow augers well for the future.

MBN Solutions remain committed to collaborative events of this nature, believing that the best way to ensure the successful continuation of the work done in this year and lasts’ Data Talent Scotland event is to start thinking (already!) about next year’s possibilities. We hope to see you there.

Scotland’s Directors of the Year Announced!

On 23rd March 2017, Scotland’s top directors were honoured at the IoD Scotland Director of the Year Awards.

This Award ceremony exposes the diversity of business life in Scotland. Categories covered a wide range of sectors from big businesses, SMEs, charities and the public sector.

Michael Young
“The IoD organised a fantastic awards ceremony. It was excellent for MBN to be in such illustrious company and to be recognised for our achievements. Over the course of the years we have repositioned many aspects of his business with the intention of professionalising its operations. A cornerstone to this has been the introduction of a full competency framework and learning and development programme. MBN are proud to support
The Institute of Direct & Digital Marketing’s Creative Data Academy!

We are delighted to announce MBN Academy’s involvement with The Institute of Direct & Digital Marketing’s Creative Data Academy programme in April of this year.

As part of our #mbnskills initiative, Robin Huggins will present and facilitate a series of Workshops to participating students covering areas such as CV Writing, Interview Research & Preparation and Social Media and Networking skills.

Robin will present at two sessions, in Edinburgh and London, following on from his successful road-trip around Scottish Universities earlier this year as part of The Data Lab’s MSc. Data Science Placement Project.

MBN Solutions are delighted to partner with The IDM to increase employability skills amongst the UK’s student population. Rob said, “MBN Solutions are honoured to be asked to collaborate with this year’s IDM Creative Data Academy programme. As a UK based, Data focussed company with an extensive International network we see, first hand, the benefit of initiatives of this kind. We are currently delivering similar skills workshops to MSc. Data Science students throughout Scotland, and wholeheartedly believe that collaborations of this type are key to addressing the often mentioned skills shortages throughout the UK in the data, digital and analytics sectors”.

MBN Welcomes Our New Executive Consultant To Lead Our Contract Division.

Reflecting on our growth plans and continually exploring the state of the market, MBN regularly finesse plans and strategy to ensure we are commercially robust and a sustainable business for the future.  Over the course of the past two years, we have seen our contractor work go from strength-to-strength.  We have experienced unparalleled growth in this area given we have run this in concert with our main recruitment business.  Despite the traditionally ‘bolted on nature’ of the work, our clients hold us in high regard and consider we are a natural first choice for contract staff in the demanding fields of  Technology, Analytics, Data Science, Blockchain and Digital.

With this firmly in mind, MBN’s board are pleased to announce another appointment to the business.  Craig Cameron joined on the 20th March 2017, to lead our dedicated contracts division to help grow and scale MBN’s offering here.

Having previously a Contract consultant position, Craig is no stranger to the challenges he faces.  Having already ‘hit the ground running’, Craig will continue to develop MBN’s offering to Clients and Contract staff alike.

Michael Young, CEO of MBN Solutions stated “Craig is a great addition to our business and we are pleased he has agreed to join us to lead this important pillar of our work.  We are looking forward to Craig’s contribution and to developing our contracts offering into a world class service”.

Paul Forrest, Chairman of MBN Solutions and Senior Partner at Consilium Analytics commented “Craig will be an important member of the top team in both businesses.  With his help we anticipate being able to substantially grow our contract work for MBN Solutions and to fundamentally assist clients of MBN Consilium by sourcing contract staff for implementation activities”.

Consilium’s business model is based around the provision of board level activities relating to insight & analytics strategy, project management and data advisory.  This means the delivery model for implementation is enacted through strategic alliance partners for tools, system integration, bespoke insight regimes and structuring data schemas.  This will lead to increasing our requirement for, and schedule of, contract staff to support Consilium’s clients when they embark on the implementation phase of the work we perform.

If you’d like to discuss contract staffing needs please do not hesitate to contact Craig here.  If you want to know more about contract work through MBN Solutions or working with Consilium Analytics, contact us here.

2017 Challenges for Children with Cancer.

This year a team from MBN (Michael Young, Russell Dalgleish, Paul Forrest, Pete Docherty, Scott Dalgleish – so far)  will be taking on 3 (probably more) major obstacle courses – Mighty Deerstalker, Tough Mudder and Coast to Coast!

We would really appreciate if you could sponsor us, any donation would be great!

Our Just Giving Page

Children with Cancer UK

Children with Cancer UK is the leading national children’s charity dedicated to the fight against childhood cancer. Almost 4,000 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the UK. The charity’s aims are to determine the causes, find cures and provide care for children with cancer.

The strapline for Children with Cancer UK is ‘fighting the UK’s biggest child killer’. Sadly cancer is still the most common medical cause of death beyond infancy in children and young people in the UK. When Children with Cancer UK refers to a ‘child’ we use the definitions from the Office of National Statistics – meaning children aged from 1 to 15.

March - DONE

Mighty Deerstalker
The UK’s biggest night race.

In the Scottish borders, this 10k is probably the hardest

off-road-Tweed-clad-pipe-lit-plus-four-and-headtorch-wearing run that exists. You are sent across rivers, through forests and over a mountain or 2 in the pitch dark of a chilly March night.

Tough Mudder
10-12 miles, 20+ obstacles

Held at Drumlanrig Castle, Tough Mudder is a 10-12 mile mud and obstacle course designed to drag you out of your

comfort zone by testing your physical strength, stamina, and mental grit. With no podiums, winners, or clocks to race against, it’s not about how fast you can cross the finish line. Rather, it’s a challenge that emphasizes teamwork, camaraderie, and accomplishing something almost as tough as you are.

Coast to Coast
Run, Ride and Kayak 105 miles

across the Scottish Highlands. The route of this two-day challenge takes in some of the most mysterious and wild locations in Scotland. Run, ride and kayak past Cawdor Castle, Loch Ness, Glen Nevis and Glen Coe, to name but a few stunning sights! The Highland terrain and weather breeds tough folk and if you take on this challenge then you will find out why.

At MBN, we’re more than just another recruitment business. We are a full service People Solutions business specialising in finding and securing the very best staff and talent for our clients. This requires us to have an in depth knowledge and appreciation for the sectors and skill areas in which we operate.

Our thought leadership can be seen on our website, but it is the compilation of such commentary that allows us to share our unique insight. MBN decided in 2012 to launch a series of regular events where we invite industry leaders, clients and interested parties to share an evening of networking, presentations and general insight into the areas of our subject matter expertise, namely, Technology, Data Science & Analytics and Digital Initiatives.
