Swirrl and Scottish Government Talk Open Data….
As Britain sweltered during one of the hottest days of the year on record, a group of Data enthusiasts kept cool in MBN Solutions’ Glasgow Headquarters with some chilled refreshments and a top-drawer presentation and demonstration from 2 passionate Open Data enthusiasts.
July’s Scotland Data Science & Technology Meet-Up featured a tag-team format with Bill Roberts – Co-Founder and CEO of Swirrl, joining Liam Cavin – Statistician with The Scottish Government, to share some outputs from the work they have been doing with Open Data.
Bill’s company’s flagship product “Publishmydata” helps government do more with their data. Its unique offering allows disparate data sets located within a huge variety of silos to be “linked”, searched, downloaded and utilized. Bill’s fantastic quote around “doing government better” illustrated the benefit this product can bring to not only the public sector but to citizens throughout the country.
Liam took us through the types of data available, their format and structure and the obvious benefit that this piece of work can bring to the Analysts, Statisticians and Data Scientists who frequently require access to very large, accurate and referenceable date sets. Of particular interest to our audience was the “Atlas” feature which allowed a granular level of detail on each area of the country with a huge list of accompanying available datasets.
Our audience took away some key findings from Bill and Liam including:
- The huge number of available Open Data Sets – 265 linked datasets are available for use under the initiative
- The ease in which this data can be accessed via download and/or API
- The support available for users including Help sections and email contact fields on each page.
