I’d only been in the bottom floor of the Bayes Centre before yesterday. I hosted a Scotland Data Science & Technology Workshop just after the Centre was opened, but we used a meeting room directly at the front of the building on the ground floor.
Yesterday, I got to visit the (very awesome!) Data Lab offices on the 4th floor for a very important meeting.
It only seems like a couple of weeks ago that we were hosting our Data Driven Decision Engineering event in Glasgow’s East End to celebrate the completion of last year’s Placement Programme.
My visit to Data Lab was to deliver the first set of Employability training modules to the Data Lab funded students who have just begun their year-long MSc. studies at Universities based in Edinburgh.
I was accompanied on the day by the “Dream Team” of Jamie Watson and Rasiba Norin. Two consummate professionals who form part of the incredible team here at MBN Solutions.
Hosting us was Marian Dunbar, Data Science Skills Co-ordinator at Data Lab, and joining us were just over 20 students from various MSc. courses at University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University and Edinburgh Napier University.
With a quick bit to eat under our belts (thank you, Marian!) we got underway with an overview of the MSc. Placement Programme and an opportunity for the students to ask any and all questions relating to what they should expect should they take part in the scheme.
Moving quickly on, we moved on to the first of our Employability sessions – the creation of an industry standard CV. There’s always a lively debate around the subject – with various opinions and observations being voiced (sometime very forcefully!) – and we closed off a lively session with some 1-2-1 sessions with each of the students where we reviewed their updated resumes. I’m glad to report – they all paid attention!
We then moved on to Interview research, preparation and practice before finishing the day with an overview of how Networking can enhance Employability. With a plethora of opportunities for students to engage with industry over Social Media or through the various Meet-Up groups, Events and Conferences happening on a constant basis throughout Scotland the time has never been better for emerging talent to talk directly to the people who know what’s in store for them beyond graduation.
We finished up just as the sun went down over Edinburgh. Tired but elated. Working closely with highly intelligent, personable people is one of the (many) things I love about the work we do at MBN Solutions and I am very much looking forward to further collaborating with this group – and all the other amazing University cohorts I am soon to engage with.
Which brings me, finally, to the whole point behind yesterday.
These students, funded by Data Lab, will be looking for Industrial Placement Projects next summer. If you work for an organisation that are looking to find out more about this ground-breaking, highly successful Programme – drop me a line at: [email protected]mbnsolutions.com
